On Wednesday, December 5th, 2012, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey confirmed that he ordered the transfers of five Philadelphia Narcotics Officers, and one Lieutenant. Ramsey declined to discuss his reasons for transferring the officers, however, all five officers were transferred to quieter, low-profile police units.

One suspected cause of the transfers was the fact that the District Attorney’s Office no longer wanted to call upon the officers in question to testify in drug cases. The DA’s office determined that the credibility of the Narcotics Officers was too badly damaged, and unreliable.

Many of the officers transferred have come under fire for their actions in the course of their duties. These officers have been the subject of several lawsuits in the past involving allegations that the officers used excessive force, conducted illegal searches, and falsified information about suspects in an effort to obtain search warrants.
